BLOOMINGTON — It was supposed to go a little better. Expectations were higher for Lake Central s 3,200-meter relay team of Cole Easterday, Casey Garvey, Clayton Goldman and Takoda Potts at the 113th IHSAA state championships Saturday at the Robert C. Haugh Track and Field Complex at Indiana University in Bloomington.

The Indians were seeded third in the first race of the day, but a torrential rain storm delayed warmups and made it difficult for all the competitors. Goldman, who was on L.C. s state championship 1,600 relay team a year ago was disappointed but also proud with his team s time of 7 minutes, 56.24 seconds, which was good to medal in the event.

Sometimes it s just not your day,” Goldman said. We had three guys who hadn t run at state before. It s different. But I m proud we got down here and get to get up on that (medal) box. We all put a lot of hard work in, stayed together and it s unfortunate it didn t pan out.”

While L.C. s seed didn t hold, Crown Point s foursome of Alec Gerlach, Matthew Mosak, Dylan Wallace and Matthew Wielgus did. The Bulldogs were ninth and finished ninth in the 3,200 with a time of 7 minutes, 56.81 seconds

We hit where we were supposed to be,” Mosak said. I couldn t be more honored to race against the best in the state. I couldn t be more proud of the Crown Point guys.”

Region was long in the jumps: Wheeler senior Jacob Wasz was seeded No. 1 in the long jump. But his jump of 22-10 3/4 ended up No. 3 in the state, a bit below his expectations.

I was hoping to hit 24,” Wasz said. We had to jump in the rain which was kind of tough. I m happy I medaled but I didn t get what I was hoping for.”

The Region was very solid in the long jump. Crown Point s Garret Shoemaker was ninth (22-1), Chesterton s Loui Razo was 10th (22-0), Calumet s Thomas Jackson was 13th (21-8), Chesterton s Phillip Flores was 15th (21-5 1/2), Wheeler s Jason Novak was 17th (21-3 3/4) and Michigan City s Cevin Crawford was 18th (21-10).

The comeback kid: Hanover Central s Trenton Fanta, who finished fourth in last year s discus, scratched out at the regional, but he got out in the shot put. And the Purdue-bound thrower finished fourth in the shot with a toss of 56-6 1/2.

The regional was a big confidence booster because I hit 60 twice,” Fanta said. My goal was to win state so I m not happy with a fourth. There ve been a lot of ups and downs in my career. I m happy where I m going.”
